Objective
The initial goal was to reduce the overall weight of the terminal and to build the lightest structure possible. To achieve this goal, a unique overhanging roof, based on a composite polyester sandwich system was designed to complement the mainly metal structure built by Transmétal Industrie.
The overall structure is 75 meters long and houses both the waiting halls and the ticket counters, and can accommodate up to 6 ferries at a time. Fiber composite sandwich panels made of polyester resin, multiaxial glass and structural SAERfoam core material were selected as the material for the roof structure.

The 400 m² roof, which is divided into several modular panels, was produced by Apples Composites in their factory in Marseilles using vacuum infusion. This low-density PU foam, reinforced with a 3D glass construction, is ideal for a wide range of applications in the civil engineering, automotive, truck cladding and marine sectors. The use of processes such as RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) or vacuum infusion, as in this project, allows structural sandwich panels to be produced easily and efficiently.
With the right density and glass-reinforced bridges following both panel directions, the mechanical properties can be tailored to the best possible weight-performance ratio, providing an extremely cost-effective solution compared to existing processes. To further simplify the use of this unique sandwich construction, the material can be supplied cut, kitted and “grooved” to improve the manufacturing process.
After a perfectly executed installation of the module panels, the project was completed on time and on budget and handed over to Transmétal Industrie in June 2013.
