Founded in Marseille in 1991, the H2X shipyard carries out conversions and new builds of motor and sailing yachts in monohull and multihull construction. Its latest project was carried out at its largest site: construction of the IXcat65 catamaran and the current IXcat78 began in mid-2014 and is still ongoing. These construction projects by H2X are great examples of the productivity improvements made in recent years.

The production process should be optimized from the fibre to the finished component. Reinforcing materials cannot possibly be held in place without adhesive: until now, boat and ship builders have been forced to apply large amounts of spray adhesive to the foam parts and all vertical surfaces over which the fabric must be draped when attaching the glass fabrics to the hull form. When using conventional spray adhesive, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages: the manufacturers of the composites have to spray the adhesive by hand onto one or both sides of the fiberglass fabrics. This process requires large quantities of spray adhesive and the employees have to spend a lot of time spraying the glass fabrics. The bottom line is that this is a very time-consuming and labor-intensive process, which is ultimately associated with higher processing costs.
To reduce processing costs for the new Nahaura catamaran, H2X discovered the benefits of using SAERfix on NCF materials to build a catamaran.

The SAERTEX team tested and studied the possible uses of SAERfix for this application in collaboration with engineers from H2X. It immediately became apparent that these self-adhesive glass fiber reinforcements could be used for H2X in such a way that the spraying process could be completely eliminated.
The adhesives in the SAERfix product group simplify and facilitate the application and reapplication of multiaxial fabrics made of glass, carbon, or aramid. Fabrics finished with SAERfix EP and SAERfix UP are self-adhesive, easy to lay, easy to cut, and easy to place in the correct position. SAERfix is not harmful to the environment and has been classified as „not harmful to water“ by a well-known environmental analysis laboratory. Even the PET film applied for better handling is recyclable.
SAERfix has the following advantages: Using SAERfix reduces the time required for laying the fabric, especially in vertical molds (e.g., for the manufacture of rotor blades or boat hulls). SAERfix is easy to use: Precise positioning of the fabric is very easy, even on highly curved surfaces. Furthermore, unlike other conventional adhesives, SAERfix EP does not affect the mechanical properties of the laminate, making it the perfect solution for H2X.
The results with H2X are impressive: A time saving of around 20 %, as SAERfix is easy to place and reposition. Cost savings of around 10 % thanks to supply chain optimization. SAERfix is environmentally friendly - an environmentally friendly alternative to using solvent-based spray adhesives. Controlling the amount of adhesive is crucial for good adhesion and complete wetting of the fibers during the infusion process. This results in higher laminate quality for the manufacturer.
