Complete SAERTEX reinforcement for hybrid passenger catamaran
The GATTO shipyard is using 100% SAERTEX reinforcement materials for its latest passenger boat. The boatbuilding company based in the south of France specializes in the construction of passenger boats and ferries. In close cooperation, a tailor-made solution for the maritime industry was realized for this project - from the idea to the sea.

The aim of the project was to build a modern, lightweight and environmentally friendly passenger boat for daily tourist traffic. The 18-meter-long boat, with room for 70 passengers and crew, enables a fast connection from Bandol to the Calanques National Park in Marseille. The hybrid propulsion system using diesel and solar energy and the use of composite materials to replace heavy metal or wood materials emphasize the innovative and sustainable character of the project.

SAERTEX played a central role in the implementation of the project and worked closely with all stakeholders involved from the outset. One of the biggest challenges was to qualify the right materials for the project and ensure that they met the high standards that must be maintained at sea.
With the technical support of our experts, the materials Glass NCF + SAERfix and the structural core materialSAERfoam80 were selected. These fiber-reinforced materials, which are ideal for boat building, were used for the deck, interior and hull of the boat to achieve an optimal balance between weight and stability.
Vacuum infusion was used in this project to process both the multiaxial fabrics and the sandwich complexes in just one step. In this process, the materials are first placed dry in the mold and then infused with resin under pressure, resulting in uniform and error-free resin distribution. The precise control of fiber orientation and resin distribution enables accurate processing of the glass fiber composites.
SAERfix glass fabrics with a self-adhesive surface were used to position the fabrics more efficiently, making it easier to drape even complex shapes and reducing the time required by up to 50% compared to spray cans.
Thanks to the intensive collaboration of all parties involved, including the architect, the certification body and other suppliers (e.g. for resin and consumables), as well as the use of advanced composite materials, the project was successfully realized. The passenger boat is now in daily tourist service and is a prime example of modern, sustainable boat building - made in France.
