Conserving resources with and at SAERTEX

One of the key success factors in sustainable engineering is achieving minimum weight while simultaneously maximising component quality. Both are possible using lightweight construction methods facilitated by SAERTEX products. Conventional materials such as steel, aluminium, concrete and wood are being replaced by our cutting-edge composite materials made of glass, carbon and aramid fibers, delivering a significant reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels. Environmental impact is simultaneously reduced through the consequential reduction in emissions.

“Innovation for a resource-saving future” is the new SAERTEX vision. Sustainable business management is the cornerstone of long-term economic success and our products contribute significantly to this. As a company we are also continuously working on the sustainable optimization of our processes and products – and this includes our presence at the JEC WORLD 2020 trade fair.

10 EXAMPLES OF CURRENT INNOVATION ACTIVITIES ON THE SUBJECT OF SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT AT SAERTEX:

1. DIRECT CHANNELS: GLOBAL PRODUCTION PLANT NO. 16 OPENS

In 2020 SAERTEX will open its 16th production plant in Mexico. In this way we enable local sourcing for many products, with direct channels and reduced CO2 emissions.

2. INNOVATION: CARBON CSM FROM RECYCLED FIBERS

At JEC WORLD 2020, SAERTEX is presenting a new product made from recycled carbon fibers. The new Carbon CSM is made of fiber residues from current production operations at SAERTEX and is an interesting material for mold-making applications and the automotive industry.

3. RECYCLING: COMPONENTS MADE OF RESIDUE FIBERS AND FABRICS

We work together with partners in the recycling sector to ensure our residue fibers and fabrics are put to good use. For example, our residue is turned into fuel tank caps, rear parcel shelves, side panels for cars – and much more.

4. LESS WASTE: SAERFLOW WITH INTEGRATED FLOW MEDIA

SAERflow consists of a lightweight synthetic structure combined with a glass fiber reinforcement and serves as an internal resin flow medium. There is no need to apply or remove the external flow media or its associated consumable layers.

5. NEW MATERIALS FOR LONGER ROTOR BLADES

SAERTEX materials are used in the rotor blades of wind turbines where maximum strength in lightweight construction is required. Learn more about our Easy Drape UDs and the latest developments in the application of Carbon NCFs for spar caps in rotor blades with lengths of 100m and more.

6. MOBILE LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION ON LAND, WATER AND IN THE AIR

SAERTEX fabrics are used for lightweight construction in cars, buses, trucks, aircraft and ships. Our application-specific materials – such as the Ultra Fatigue UDs for leaf springs or SAERTEX LEO for applications requiring the highest level of fire protection – enable fossil fuel savings and the use of alternative drive types. 7. 2019 ISTT INNOVATION PRIZE FOR THE SAERTEX MULTICOM H2O LINER

Liners from SAERTEX multiCom are used for the trenchless rehabilitation of waste water and potable water pipelines. This is how we protect the environment and conserve precious water resources. In 2019 the new H2O Liner received the ISTT No-Dig Award in Florence.

8. OPTIMIZING PACKAGING AND TRANSPORTATION

We are working on optimizing our packaging materials and making the flow of goods more efficient – with new reusable racks and by using recyclable packaging and optimizing pallet sizes. An additionl contribution: our new SAERTEX Basic Line with its optimized packaging and logistics concept.

9. CERTIFIED SINCE 2009: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AT SAERTEX

Measures such as photovoltaic installations, conversion to LED lights, improvements to the compressed air infrastructure, recyclables separation and construction of our sustainable headquarters (SAERvision Innovation Building) help optimize our CO2 footprint.

10. SAERTEX AT JEC WORLD 2020

We are working on reusing increasingly larger parts of our exhibition stand, avoiding waste, and recycling waste materials. For example, ceiling banners are being turned into tote bags for customers, and the base of our stand is now made of recycled fishing nets. Furthermore, our European team is traveling to Paris by train this year.

Note: We are aware that there is still a lot of potential for us to become even more sustainable. We are not perfect, but we are working on continuously improving.

At the JEC WORLD 2020 we are taking a first step towards a more sustainable exhibition solution. We will remain focused on our customers and wish to continue offering them the best possible advice and services. This also includes our long-standing tradition: beer from the Münsterland region.
